Gumboots On! A Rainy-Day Celebration at Edendale Farm
Yesterday, families put on their gumboots and gathered in the Mummery Room at Edendale Farm for the Platypus Party, celebrating Where the River Runs Free. The rain outside didn’t dampen the excitement as children and parents enjoyed a morning of storytelling, creativity, and connection with nature.
Author Vikki Conley and illustrator Jedda Robaard read their latest picture book, a lyrical story that invites readers to explore the bush, follow the river, and experience the freedom and wonder of the natural world. Jedda shared that her illustrations were inspired by her own children exploring the outdoors, their curiosity and sense of adventure reflected in the artwork. Attentive readers also spotted hidden details tucked into the illustrations, encouraging them to explore the artwork closely and discover nature’s little surprises.
The hidden platypus sparked a fascinating discussion with Josh from EnviroDNA, a platypus ecologist, who explained how real platypuses camouflage themselves among logs and riverbanks to stay safe. It was a wonderful moment where story, illustration, and science came together to inspire curiosity about the natural world.
Families were delighted to purchase copies of Where the River Runs Free from the local Eltham Bookshop and have them personally signed by Vikki and Jedda after storytime.
A huge thank you to Nillumbik Shire Council, Edendale Farm, Vikki, Jedda, Eltham Bookshop, Melbourne Water, and Josh for making the event possible and to all the families who attended the Platypus Party. The rain added to the magic and reminded us that every great story begins with a splash. You can continue the adventure at home and flip, flop, flap along the river with your little ones in Where the River Runs Free.
