A Special Afternoon at Wylie's Baths
On Saturday 30 May, we joined readers, families and friends at Sydney's historic Wylie's Baths to celebrate the release of Fanny and Mina: The Fastest of Friends.
With the ocean stretching out beside us and the sound of waves rolling in below, Wylie's Baths provided a beautiful setting for a story inspired by two remarkable Australian women. Written by Samantha Tidy and illustrated by Hilary Cresp, Fanny and Mina: The Fastest of Friends introduces young readers to the extraordinary friendship between champion swimmers Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie.
The event felt especially meaningful at Wylie's Baths, a place deeply connected to Sydney's swimming history and the world in which Fanny and Mina made their mark. Surrounded by readers, families and supporters, we spent the afternoon celebrating a story of friendship, perseverance and courage.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Q&A, expertly hosted by She Shapes History. The children asked the questions we were all thinking, and Samantha and Hilary answered each one with warmth, enthusiasm and good humour.
We were also delighted to meet Eliane Morel at the launch. Eliane is currently bringing the story of Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie to new audiences through Dangerous When Wet, a new Australian musical inspired by the lives of these pioneering swimmers. It was wonderful to see how their legacy continues to inspire audiences across both theatre and literature, and we are thrilled that Fanny and Mina: The Fastest of Friends is available for audiences attending the musical to enjoy at home.
We are passionate about publishing stories that connect young readers with fascinating people and moments from Australia's past. Fanny and Mina: The Fastest of Friends does just that, shining a light on two women whose friendship and determination helped shape Australian sporting history.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for this special afternoon. We left inspired by the conversations, the beautiful surroundings and the many people who continue to champion Australian stories.
We look forward to seeing this remarkable story find its way into the hands of young readers across the country.
